There are different emotions and memories that we associate with scents. The brain is connected to the sense of smell and it remembers what is going on at the time the smell is happening. The smell of a pumpkin pie cooking brings the many memories of the holiday season. The smell of freshly cut grass the memories of summers gone by. The sense of smell can be very powerful influence on our mood. What we smell can help relax the body after a long day. Certain scents can help us feel more courage or energized. Its amazing the influence scent has on our lives!
At the beginning of history we find many people using candles as a source of light. Many churches used and still use the subtle light source of a candle to create a relaxed and reverent atmosphere. Tallow, derived from animal fat, was used in those days. When oil became more readily available paraffin candles also increased in popularity. They were cleaner and did not have an animal scent. There were and are others such as: beeswax that is all natural and has a slight honey scent, and soy wax which comes from soybeans therefore all natural as well and can have a scent added to it. The best waxes to have in your home are soy and beeswax but are also more expensive.
Scented candles can be scented with perfumes to fit the scent you want. Perfumes are made in a laboratory by special scientists who know how to make a candle smell like cotton candy. Aromatherapy is another popular way to get a scent to influence the mood. This is a scent created from a natural source. Lavender is made from the flower of the plant. Aromatherapy is usually more expensive because tit takes more effort to make the oils used and there are limited resources. Lets go through a couple of popular scents used for different moods.
Lavender- This is the most popular scent for its relaxing properties. It is helpful for those who have a hard time falling asleep.
Vanilla- provides a calm and happy feeling to a room.
Floral- gives a romantic feeling
Jasmin- reduces anger as well as mental and emotional stress
Cinnamon- helps with emotional fatigue
Citrus- gives an elevated mood and a freshness to any room.
